Because i386 is the old architecture... i686 is the sixth-generation x86
line, which includes PPro/PII/PIII/P4/Celeron/Athlon/Duron/Crusoe. Your
system is both an i686 and an i386 (i686 is a subset of i386, that is the
686 is compatible with the 586 (Pentium), 486, 386, 286, 8086 and 8088)

But when I did a xfree86 -version 
it said

WHY?
