Well, unless you uprgaded with RPM, RPM will still show 4.0.3 as being the installed version. Disregard this, RPM is wrong.
To get GNOME back, look in the file called .xinitrc (might also be .xsession or .Xclients) in your home dir. To run GNOME, it should contain only the line 'exec gnome-session'.
