Please help a poor newbie,
I recently attempted to install XFree86 4.1.0 on my
machine. This was my first X install attempt (though I'm fairly sure that an
older version of X had already been loaded by the Debian installer), and I
followed all of the istructions, attempting to overwrite the previous install.
Everything went smoothly, but when I tried to configure with xf86config,
xf86cfg, or the line 'XFree86 -config', i got the following:
xf86cfg /lib/libc.so.6: version 'GLIBC_2.2'
not found (required by xf86cfg)
xf86cfg /lib/libc.so.6: version 'GLIBC_2.2'
not found (required by /usr/X11R6/lib/libx11.so.6)
and back to bash prompt. What does this mean? I ran ''sh Xinstall.sh
-check' prior to install and wastold that I was running Linux 2.2 (which I knew
because I installed Debian 2.2r3). Also, the README seems to imply that the
newer versions of X, such as 4.1.0, should install into /etc/X11, but I find no
such directory. Everything seems to be in /usr/X11R6, where older versions would
install. I tried renaming my /usr/X11R6 so that a new install wouls not
overwrite (and therefore install in /etc/X11), but it didn't work.
I know that's a lot of questions, but I'd really appreciate help. I'm
determined to get this thing running.
Thanks,
