When I ran a Matrox G400 under XFree86 4.0.6 it chugged until I went down to XFree 3.3.6, where it ran like a dream.
Unfortunatelty, that card was borrowed and when I returned it I went back to my old Voodoo3 card, which is only supported by the 4.0.x releases. I installed XFree86 4.1.0 in an attempt to improve performance but the newer drivers still chug at a level that makes even Chromium BSU unplayable.
