Never seen that. I also run FreeBSD 4.4 with XFree86-4 and an i810.
Questions:

1. Did you install XFree86-4 from the ports?
2. Did you compile a kernel with 

        device agp
3. Do you have the line below in /boot/loader.conf

agp_load="YES"
