I don't know whether we are speaking of the same driver but there was one which supported DRI with EITHER 16 OR 32 but NOT 24 (don't ask me why...) If my memory does not play me tricks it was with X 3.3.6, I had RH 7.1 or 7.2 and the specific card I had was only accelerated in 3.3.6 so RH install had "activated" 3.3.6 instead of 4.x.x.
