I don't know whether we are speaking of the same driver but there was one which 
supported DRI with
EITHER 16 OR 32 but NOT 24 (don't ask me why...)
If my memory does not play me tricks it was with X 3.3.6, I had RH 7.1 or 7.2 and the 
specific
card I had was only accelerated in 3.3.6 so RH install had "activated" 3.3.6 instead 
of 4.x.x.
IF your card is supported in 4.x.x possibly switching to it (in case this is the 
problem) might
give you the resolution you want...
