I'd be grateful for any suggestions that might fix a display
problem that has cropped up on an previously normal monitor.
The image is horizontally compressed at the left and right sides 
of the screen, and stretched in the centre. No vertical 
distortion is seen, and the monitor controls have no
effect on the distortion.
Is there any means of eliminating such distortion? If so,
suggestions would be welcome.

The system is as follows:
