No, it's not on an NEC machine; we're using the Aaeon Gene-4310 sub-compact board, which is a Geode design (very nice).
I can't / don't want to upgrade to 4.x yet because we're using a Dynapro NFI
touchscreen and its driver is only certified for 3.3.6. Of course, it may well work on
4.x, but I'm hoping to get everything working before attempting to upgrade X to v4.
An update: I couldn't find my error message ("sync - display should be between 8 and
24") in the X documentation, but I tried adjusting the modeline to read:
"800x600" 39.06 800 816 896 1024 600 601 603 625
This at least gives an X display (in response to "X -ac"), but on returning to text
mode, the display is clearly unhappy, and a second "X -ac" stops the system dead (no
response to any combination of keys pressed).
I've worked through the X Video Timings Howto, and also tried the online modeline
calculator, but it seems that flat panels are much fussier than multi-syncs.

This isn't on an NEC Versa VX notebook, by any chance? If so, upgrading to
XFree86 4.1.0 would help significantly (I have such a notebook, which is
running LFS 2.4.5 with XFree86 4.1.0 perfectly)

Subject: [Newbie]Flat panel "sync - display" error
Folks -
I'm trying to get XFree86 v3.3.6 (on RedHat 6.2) to run with an NEC 800x600
flat panel. The hardware is known good, because all the Linux boot text is
beautifully crisp. But when I try "X -ac", I get the message:
(--) SVGA: mode 800x600: horizontal sync out of range (sync -
display should be between 8 and 24)
Can anyone clarify this? The modeline I'm using is:
"800x600" 39.06 800 824 896 1024 600 601 603
625
(taken more-or-less directly from NEC's datasheet).
I can provide more detail on request (X log, full XF86Config, hardware
details, ...) but wanted to keep this initial post short.
