After a long battle, we are running an X server on the Aaeon Gene-4310 (MediaGX) with
an NEC NL8060 800x600 flat panel.
My thanks to (Sprague, IT3) and (Alan Hourihane) for vital insights.

The Gene-4310 has no video RAM, therefore needs a Framebuffer. However, the X
configurator in Red Hat 7.1 insists on XF86_SVGA instead: you can choose different
amounts of video RAM, but you can't say "None - I'm using main memory instead".

Getting the Framebuffer working required a "vga=788" incantation in lilo.conf.

The following XF86Config stuff then works for us:

HorizSync 37.0-41.2 # actual frequency is 37.9 kHz
VertRefresh 58.14-62.10 # actual frequency is 60.0 Hz

        Modeline "800x600" 39.06 800 824 896 1024 600 601 603 625

with the 39.06 coming from (40MHz / 1024 dots).

(It would appear that the error messages about "sync - display" thrown by the
XF86_SVGA server were completely misleading.)

Two minor anomalies and a suggestion:

1. Red Hat 7.1 X configuration claimed the display was "DDC probed monitor: APF0606".
We've never heard of APF, and as far as we know, the NL8060 doesn't talk DDC?!

2. The FB server signs on with "XFree86 v3.3.6a" although X is 4.0.3 for this version
of Red Hat (i.e. 7.1).

3. Couldn't the X configuration offer the FB device as a fall-back option for cases
like this?

Thanks again.
