X isn't crashing. Rather, GNOME isn't starting. Make sure that gcc is
installed (it's not finding cpp, which is the C preprocessor.) Also, make
sure that GTK+ is installed (it needs glib, also. Not to be confused with
glibc, which everything needs.)

Subject: [Newbie]Xwindow svr crashes

Hi,

I am some what new to Linux. I've tried during the last week or so
to get X up, but the server keeps crashing irrelevant of the adaptor I am
using ( I' ve tried Trio 3D/2X, Matrox G100 ). Some times the server comes
up momentarily, but crashes when I return to console 1 after working on
another. The following is the error it reports:

sh:/lib/cpp: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/gnome-session: error while loading shared libraries:
libgtk-1.2.so.0:
cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory

waiting for X server to shut down

Ther were no errors during installation. Can anybody tell me what is
wrong.Pls.

 Rgds.,

 nal
