I should put them there, instead of as FontPath entries in
XF86Config-4?  Or should they be there as well?

Amazing...:-) (I'm thinking of the installation process)

Combined with an appropriate FontPath entry of
        FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType"
this made Opera start displaying web pages nicely.
