Chances are you don't have truetype fonts enabled.  I'm not familiar with 
RedHat distros, but I'll assume you're using at least 4.x of XFree86.  If so, 
it should support true-type fonts out of the box, so you probably just need 
to configure it correctly.

It discusses how to set up fonts in X, including truetype fonts.
