sort of. X11 is a standard for the X Window System (or something
like that). it's administrated by The Open Group. (which isn't really open
by our standards). the current revision of the standard is X11Release6.6.
XFree86 is an implementation of that standard; just like SGI has an
implementation of X, as does HP, Sun, and the like.
at least that's how I understand it...
