I don't know if you got this the first time, so here is my response
again:

I had the exact same problem on virtually the exact same system.  The
way I got into X as a non-root user is through xdm.
First, copy the .xinitrc from root's home to the other user's directory.
All that is in my .xinitrc file anyway is "exec startkde", yours might
be different
Log in as root, and type xdm
You will get the X login screen, login as the normal user and you should
be in.

You can have it so that xdm starts everytime FBSD boots by editing the
/etc/ttys file
On the line where it says:
        ttyv8  "/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon"  xterm   off secure
Change the "off" to "on"
