I have a dell laptop and I have a usb mouse, the touchpad mouse, and the
eraser mouse (in the keyboard) all working when I start X. When I need to
move the pointer I can choose any one of the three pointing devices to do
it. I can also use all 3 at the same time, but then they fight :-)

I recall having something like this working on FreeBSD a while back, and I
thought it worked with the config file "XFree86 -configure" produced.

I now run OpenBSD current and have a similar setup, only now I need to
explicitly use /dev/wsmouse, the multiplexer device that is the combined
(multiplexed) input of all the /dev/wsmouseXXX devices.

Perhaps there is a similar device on FreeBSD?
