i had the same problem until yesterday night
My cards are up now .. 
i got X with multiple Partners oops Monitors
:-)
try XFree86 -configure
that probably will work 
if it doesn't it will create a XF86Config.new file in your /root (i did this
as root)
this is useful for ur card config's 
now u can go and edit ur Config  file for me editing /etc/X11/XF86Config did
not work but instead
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 it should work ....
