Hi Lionel, I have a Toshiba laptop. Interestingly, I downloaded what I guess is the latest s3virge driver from "Kev's page", where it seems they are on the bleeding edge of development. It mentions bugs relating to "lower resolutions". My other resolutions such as 800x600 now work, although they seem to do something like what you're describing. The window manager seems to think it has more area, perhaps 1024x768, to work with than 800x600. The result is that I have to "pan" to see all my icons, but everything looks nice. I'll try out using only one resolution and also setting virtual. Actually, though, I'm getting to the same place, i.e. too much trouble for too little gain. Mainly, I was trying to build up my knowledge so I could possibly attack a future configuration of X more systematically.
Thanks for all your advice and information. It has been very helpful.
