1. what kind of laptop is this? I know ThinkPad A30s aren't working yet with
the radeon driver. (I got one to work with the framebuffer driver, tho).
1a. if you build X from a CVS checkout, it may support your laptop better.
1b. I have heard that someone made X 4.1.99 debian packages, to support
ThinkPads

2. are you sure you're looking at the right config file? the config you
listed was for X 3; see if there's an /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, because X4 
will look to that one first.

3. someone please correct me if I'm wrong; but I think 'xf86config' (the
setup program) will only generate X3 config files. use 'XFree86 -configure'
to write your basic config file, and then edit it from there.
