the installation process uses VGA mode; so it'll work on nearly any hardware. it tries to detect what your hardware is, and then set up your eventual XF86Config-4 file to use the best driver. unfortunately, it sometimes guesses wrong. :( (tho it's usually pretty good). that may not be the problem here, tho. show us the output of /var/log/XFree86.0.log if you're trying to do startx from the command line; make sure that /usr/X11R6/bin/X is symlinked to /usr/X11R6/bin/Xwrapper.
