So the problems started when installijng that ethernet card? Try putting it in a different slot (if PCI) or give it another IRQ. Try loading the card as a kernel module. Read HOWTOs whether there is something special about that card. Check out if it's the proper module. Is it a simple ethernet card? Then there should be generic driver modules. I guess.
