is this with 3D games, or just anything?
make sure you have a section like:
Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection
in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file.
when you start X, do 'startx 2>x.log',
and examine x.log; or else look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log

no idea. I never mess with fonts. as long as they're mostly
readable, it's good enough for me. :)
