If you're able to use the mail system I guess you have succesfully made a
connection to the internet.
But I don't get it, Slackware 8.0 has XFree86 4.1.0 on the install disc,
did you install it? I'm using Slack myself.
If you installed it, log in as root and type "XFree86 -configure", then
"xwmconfig" and chose a window manager (I like gnome and windowmaker), then
fire it up with "startx".
Netscape and galeon come with Slack as well, maybe you run pkgtool and
check whether u inatlled them.
