        What does dmesg look like for your mouse?  You said that it sometimes 
shows up as not configured.  Is this a cordless, ps/2, serial, or USB mouse?
/dev/mouse is not a module, it's usually a symlink to the device that is really 
your mouse.  The device that is really your mouse should show up in dmesg.
