I
have been wrestling with this problem for quite some time now and I am totally
clueless. I've got an ATI Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO video card, and I'm trying
to run Mandrake 8.0 with X. I have no problem booting/running Linux but
when I 'startx' I get a blank screen with no errors - my monitor appears to
go into 'standby' when I try to run X - at which point I loose all control of my
system and become unable to feed any commands to my OS. I've tried just
about every release of Xfree86 I could find (the most recent one being 4.1.0),
none of which have solved this problem (even after configuring my X server with
VERY modest settings). I have no fancy configuration on my video card (I
have only my monitor plugged connected to it, no special VIVO peripherals) and
have had no problems whatsoever installing and running X on other computers on
my LAN (all of which have less sophisticated hardware...fyi). I'm somewhat
new to Linux and I cannot find anything about this problem anywhere. Please
Help!
