Greetings,
I recently received a new Dell C400, a very slick laptop. After repartitioning the hard drive and installing Red Hat 7.2, I discovered that the XFree 4.1.0 distro included does not support the i830 chipset that is used for graphics in this machine. I went to the Intel site and discovered a page that talks about how others have used the VESA driver but I could not make that work either. The Intel site indicated that 4.2.0 will support the i830 natively and after reading the archives here it seems that there are others that have had success with the current code. I've decided to try to build a new server that uses the new driver. So, I've never built anything before and I'm really going to need some help with this. I checked out the xc module and read over the INSTALL document but I thought I would ask for some help on the list as well. Can anyone give me some advice on how to proceed here? Which pieces of the XFree tree do I need to build? For example, can I just build the server that includes the i830 driver support and use that with the rest of my 4.1 distro or do I need to rebuild everything and reinstall? In either case, are there specific instructions somewhere on how to proceed? Thanks in advance! FM Frank W.
