I not really an expert, but I'd start with uninstalling 3.3.6, then rpm
-i what I have in rpm -qa off CD#1:

(base)
server
100 fonts
75 fonts
xfs
libs

Once that's done, try drakxconf to configure. If that doesn't work, you
may need to make a symlink X to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 in the same dir
and/or in /etc/X11.

When I last installed 8.1, the installer choked on the base 4.1 rpm and
X wasn't configured when the install was supposedly done.
