I think there are diffswhich can do the trick. A diff file is not the complete
program but only the differences from one version to the next, maybe the
comparison to a patch would be closer. you gotta head over to xfree86.org, take
a look at their ftp and somewhere there you'll find sth like a file with 4.0.0
and diff in the name. guess there's even a short manual on this in the package.
untar: hmmm lemme see if i remember this right:
tar xzvf <file.tar>
or, if you got midnicht commander, you should be able to dive into the tar
archive by selecting it and copy its content into a directory, just like you
would in norton in msdos/win.

if you're not sure about the tar command (or don't trust me :), try
man tar
