Well, on Saturday, I got really brave (or just fed up with an unaccelerated
framebuffer) and downloades the CVS version of XFree86 (4.1.99.5). (I don't
think I got it all the first time, as it crashed during the build) anyway, I
managed to sucessfully build and install it! I'm still amazed at that,
really. I needed a new X because my video card (Radeon 8500) is unsupported
in 4.1.0, but is supposed to be in the CVS version. (It is.)
I had read somewhere that whenever new libraries are added, ldconfig should
be run. so I did that too, just in case....
After a bit of tweaking in the XF86Config-4 file (puuting the right lines in
for appropriate drivers), I got the horrible xterm and twm, but at least the
flicker was gone (hooray). I had previously been using KDE. Commenting out
some stuff in xinitrc and changing the last line to exec /usr/bin/kdm
restored KDE. So I'm happy. I now have 1024 x 768 at 16 bit color at 85 Hz,
which will suffice quite nicely until v 4.2.0 is released.
So yes, you guys can build X too, as I had very little experience building
anything. Go for it!
And a great big THANK YOU to Carl W. Soderstrom for his extremely valuable
advice, which without it, I wouldn't have had a clue. Way to go, Carl!
Have a great day!
