The X server has to be started before startkde can be successfully executed. I can't remember which X config files are which and I have never used FreeBSD. Look in your home directory for some files named .Xsession or .Xclients which have the command to execute the window manager. In your case it is currently executing "twm" and needs to be changed to "startkde".
