The X server has to be started before startkde can be successfully executed.
I can't remember which X config files are which and I have never used
FreeBSD. Look in your home directory for some files named .Xsession or
.Xclients which have the command to execute the window manager. In your
case it is currently executing "twm" and needs to be changed to "startkde".

Subject: [Newbie]can not run KDE

Hi all,
I've installed KDE on FreeBSD from ports. "startx" runs twm. I run
startkde but it returns:
 >startkde
 xsetroot: not found
 xset: not found
ksplash: can not connect to X server
 Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
 Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
 ERROR: KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpected.
ksmserver: can not connect to X server
connect() failed: : No such file or directory

However i can run kdm. a logon window appears and after logging on ,a
"Session Menu" and another window appear with this lines in it:
 Console log for FreeBSD.Domain
Jan 14 15:59:51 FreeBSD kdm[269]: no module loaded for 'kde'
service.
where is the problem?
I have installed kde from ports.I have downloaded packages and want
to try them. How can i uninstall previous kde and install a fresh
one?
thanks for any help.
