I'm posting this here since there may be something about what X is doing 
that is causing the problem.

Essentially, I get an error in syslog: ide_cdrom_setup failed to register 
device with cdrom driver, followed by an oops.  What is interesting is that 
this only occurs if I first log into X as anything but root.  If I log into 
X as root first, then the drivers load normally.  I'm assuming X does 
something to cause the cdrom drivers to load.  Why this only occurs when an 
unprivileged user logs in first, I don't know.

I'm using RedHat 7.2 (kernel 2.4.9, X 4.1.0), with a standard IDE cdrom 
(Creative 52X).  The hard drive is scsi.
