Do a man on twm and xinit, you should get your answer there.

I think twm is started via .xinitrc, but I commented it out and it still
started I don't know where it is starting from. My platform is RH 7.2.

That seems to depend on your platform.  Solaris?  OS/2?  I think in most
environments you replace xdm with something called gdm that comes with
Gnome.  How do you start twm?
