Why dont you just X -configure or Xconfigurator? Shouldn't touch your Gnome/KDE settings and stuff. Did the same on my sys, everything's fine. -configure should write a new file to root's home anyway instead of writing over current so you can look at it or gather the info bout the driver from it b4 actually installng
