Using Slack 8 myself. If you plainly installed, you should have 4.1.0 now. 
Try 

X -configure and take a look at the generated config file (it should tell you the name 
and where it put it, usually /root/XF86config.new or so)
If this fails, too, maybe the idea about 3.3.6 is not too bad, tho I'd rather get a 
differen video card. Hey, wanna buy my Voodoo3 2000 AGP? 20$
Nah, just kidding, will get at least 30 at eBay :D
