It works now, I checked the XF86Config-4 file and there were Horiz & Vert refresh rates were there, but I then remembered this site http://www.griffintechnology.com/monitor.html which is a nice big database of old and new monitors. Luckily mine was in there a Hyundai HCM-421E (14", 13" viewable) and change the refresh rate ranges to what they say. Works perfectly (actually a little better than in windows) at 800x600 (the site says it's the maximum). It can do 1024x768 but that's squished and would be awkward on the small screen.
Thanks for the help. Maybe if there's a FAQ that has a question regarding monitors and refresh rates, the site mentioned above should be linked to.
