The following is my experience upgrading to
XFree86 Version 4.1.0.1
(using Debian package management) under Linux 2.2.19
I have had some video problems, not all solved.
Hardware is an IBM ThinkPad 760ED, with a Trident Cyber 9385
aka TGUI9660. This is nicely detected by the server.
In all cases I have specified Option "noaccel".
1. First the success: with external an monitor: Sony Multiscan 20seII
a. Requested resolution 1024x768, Color Depth 16, Vertical Refresh range
60-85 Hz;
result: black screen
b. Tried restricting Vertical Refresh range to 70-72 Hz;
got a usable display but too narrow.
c. Used xvidtune to adjust ModeLine;
The range of usable values, and the best values I found are:
75
1024 1052 1188 1276 (left)
1028 1164 1276 (right)
1052 1188 1304 (narrow)
1028 1164 1264 (wider) (best)
768 783 789 810 (up)
775 781 810 (down) (best)
775 781 814 (shorter)
d. Tried various things for 800x600 resolution with external
monitor, nothing worked (always black screen)
2. The unsolved problem: using the built in LCD monitor, 800x600
a. Requested resoulution 800x600, Color Depth 8
Tried last working ModeLine from Xfree86 Version 3.3.2(?)
50 800 856 976 1040 600 637 643 666
result: image is torn and flickering, progressively worse from left to right
b. Tried rebooting with config file for external monitor (only 1024x768
resolution)
result: Server knows that only the LCD with 800x600 resolution is available,
and generates the same ModeLine as above:
image torn and flickering as above.
c. Tried w/out ModeLine, restricting Vert Refresh to 50-74 Hz
Result: Server generates ModeLine
50 800 864 928 1088 600 616 621 657
Image is torn and flickering, same as above.
3. And a curiousity:
a. Tried rebooting with external monitor disconnected, then reconnect ext.
monitor
result: server generates ModeLine
50 800 856 976 1040 600 637 643 666
stable 800x600 image on external monitor, but shifted about 10-20 pixels off
left edge of screen. xvidtune can not shift image fully into view.
b. Tried rebooting requesting 800x600 resolution with external monitor
connected
and ModeLine as above
Result: black screen
From the archives around the time Version 3.3.6 was released, it seems
that problems supporting the 760ED LCD monitor began with that release.
Any advice toward getting the LCD monitor working would be appreciated.
