I think that if you did it correctly then everything is ok.  There is a
discussion in the archives of the fact that the binaries do change the
default window manager to twm and you need to go to directories in
/etc/X11/init and go to the desired window manager and change it to the
one that you want.

I am a newbie indeed, have not really upgraded anything before, 
should i try this at all?

where would one find the binaries?  I have mandrake 8.1 - should 
i use rpms?

exploring my system:

$ xinstall.sh
bash: xinstall.sh: command not found
