Following up to myself, there is one more thing I should mention: 
Xinstall.sh installed XFree86, the X server, suid root.  Must be a
difference of opinion between XFree86.org and FreeBSD.org.  Since I use
xdm anyway, I just changed the permissions on XFree86 from 4711 to 0755.
