[Newbie]XFree86 4.2 help

I have installed XFree86 4.2 to get going with my ATI Radeon 8500 card but I am having no luck at all configuring. I just reinstalled Redhat 7.0 after a few years away from linux so I am pretty clueless at this point. The usual utilities fail as do the manual fixes I tried. I definitely could use some advice at this point Thanks. Dave
