I have a small problem with XFree86 4.1.0: some programs that try to take
over the whole screen -- games, say -- mangle the display. I'd like to know
if I can fix it, or if this is a known problem that went away in 4.2.

I have
- an S3 ViRGE MX
- Red Hat 7.2, fully updated, including
- XFree86 3.3.6 from XFree86-SVGA-3.3.6-42.i386.rpm
- XFree86 4.1.0 from XFree86-4.1.0-15.i386.rpm
- XFree86-compat-modules-3.3.6-42.i386.rpm
- XFree86-devel-4.1.0-15.i386.rpm
- XFree86-libs-4.1.0-15.i386.rpm
- XFree86-tools-4.1.0-15.i386.rpm

I reproduce the problem with xmame compiled from an xmame-0.57.1-1 srpm
picked up on the net.

By default, the Red Hat installation configured my system to use XFree86
3.3.6. Under that setup, "xmame pang" (which emulates the game "Pang" in an
ordinary window) and "xmame -x11-mode 1 pang" (which takes over the whole
screen) both work just fine.

If I "telinit 3" to get rid of X, then "xinit -- /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 :0"
to start XFree86 4.1.0, "xmame pang" still works just fine, but
"xmame -x11-mode 1 pang" fails. The screen flashes black, as if xmame has
taken control, but then the screen resumes displaying the X desktop. The
display does not respond to mouse movements: I have focus-follows-mouse set,
but the (only) window on the desktop never receives focus. xmame is running:
it generates sound and responds to key presses, so I can quit the program.
When the program quits, the screen flashes black, then the desktop is
restored, the mouse is active and all is normal.

I tried adding 'Option "NoAccel"', then both 'Option "NoAccel"' and
'Option "NoUseFB"', to XF86Config-4. The symptoms didn't change.

I have attached a 4.1 log and the output of xinit for the 3.3.6 server.

I haven't tried this under XFree86 4.2.

In the past, I had similar problems with older versions of xmame and many
other games under Mandrake 7.2, which IIRC used XFree86 4.1 by default.
Often the screen would show "fat pixels" and repeated columns.
