Could be your fonts, you can
try again by removing all font paths from your /etc/X11/XF86Config (resp
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 for
some distros) and (if it is not already there) add in the module section
Load "freetype" # TrueType font handler
Load "type1" # Adobe Type 1 font handler
Load "speedo"
If it does not work, post your XF86Config[-4]
