I had the exact same symptoms with a Savage4 chip.  I upgraded to XF4.1.99 
which was supplied by Red Hat's "up2date" service and it reduced the 
incidence of these problems.  It sounds like the driver for your card has 
problems and upgrading may fix it.  It won't do any harm anyway.
