This is intriguing.  The screenshot at the bottom of
http://www.xfree86.org/~keithp/render/ looks really cool.  I know you've
got xterm using client-side fonts, and you're using twm.  Can you tell
us a bit more about other applications you use that use client-side
fonts, and maybe a bit about what you have in your .twmrc?
