This one is the (by default) used one (both for 3.x and 4.x).

Some distros wants to install both 3.x and 4.x. On those this is the 4.x
config and the previous one is 3.x. If you compile X by yourself this
file will not be used (correct me if Im wrong).

Usually a "template" for (3.x and maybe 4.x). Not used on any distro
(correct me if Im wrong).

There might also be a "/etc/XF86Config.pre" if you use sax.

Usually a sym link to one of the previous. (guessing here, as I do not
even have the file ).

Usually a sym link to one of the previous (guessing here, as I do not
have it).

Hope this helps.
