Is this xdm trying to start the Xserver, or startx? Did it used to work, and suddenly stopped (what was the last thing you messed with)? If it's xdm, take a look at /etc/ttys. Does the line that starts xdm have ttyvc in the first column? IIRC it should be ttyv4 (it's been a long time since I ran 3.3), but in any case, the last character should be a digit. That is, unless you've (unsuccessfully) created more than 10 virtual terminals. 3.3 isn't from that (thankfully brief) period when /dev was being constructed automagically at boot time, is it?
