I'd like a little more context here.  Is this xdm trying to start the
Xserver, or startx?  Did it used to work, and suddenly stopped (what was
the last thing you messed with)?

If it's xdm, take a look at /etc/ttys.  Does the line that starts xdm
have ttyvc in the first column?  IIRC it should be ttyv4 (it's been a
long time since I ran 3.3), but in any case, the last character should
be a digit.  That is, unless you've (unsuccessfully) created more than
10 virtual terminals.  3.3 isn't from that (thankfully brief) period
when /dev was being constructed automagically at boot time, is it?  I'll
assume you have a good reason not to move to 4.5.
