My understanding, which is probably no better than yours, is that GLX,
even when done in software, is done in the server, not in the client.

Are you saying that "glxinfo -display dave:0.0" reported GLX extensions
for the glxinfo in XFree86 4.0.1, but the glxinfo in 4.2.0 does not?
