Hi there – I tried to send this two days ago,
but I’m not sure it went through.
Anyway, here it is again. I’m trying to install Redhat 7.1 or 7.2 on a Pentium
II 400. I have an ATI Radeon VE video
card, a Viewsonic PF775 monitor, a sound card, and a 10/100 NIC. I run the installation from the bootable
cd’s I made. Everything seems to
install without a hitch – although during the xwindows
configuration, I cannot test my resolution and color depth. My problem is that when I boot the system after installing
RHL, the screen flashes on and off.
I’ve determined that the problem is xwindows
starting up, failing, and then re-starting.
If I use a text login, the system works fine – but XWINDOWS NEVER
WORKS! It’s driving me crazy. I’ve seen a bunch of people with this
problem, but I can’t seem to find the solution. I’ve tried different drivers (Radeon (generic), Radeon AGP, Radeon AGP VIVO, Standard
SVGA). I’ve tried all kinds of
color depths and resolutions (8-bit 640*480, 24-bit 1024*768). Also, I tried an Riva TNT2 AGP
video card and had similar problems. The error message I get when I type “startx” at the command prompt is: “XIO: fatal IO
error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server “:0.0” after 0
requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.” The error message I get when I go through “Xconfigurator” is: “There is a problem with your X configuration. You may go back and modify your configuration
or exit now.” Thanks for taking the time to check out my problem! -Jason |
