[Newbie]mouse problems

Hi,   I'm using FreeBSD 4.4, and just installed XF 4.2.0.  When I start X with startx gnome seems to start and the keyboard seems to work, but the mouse doesn't.  When I move the mouse, the mousepointer jumps around. I have a Logitech cordless desktop (cordless mouse and cordless keyboard). Does anyone know how to make this work?   Thanks,   Marc
