Hello,

I have a hard time setting up Linux; Red Hat 7.1 on a 2 months old Dell 1.8 GHz Optiplex 240 that already is running Win2K. Anyway, I partitionned and installed the system on the 20 GB last portion of the 80 GB HD, but get errors that causes the infamous respawning to happen.

First message I get when booting up from the linux boot-disk (havent had time to configure dual boot yet) is during initialisation:

IP information for eth0 failed        (everything else seems to be OK)

then, I guess, this is somehow causing the endless spawning error msg

Init: Id"x"respawning too fast (about 20 flashes followed by 10 s still) times 5 or 6,  then 5 minutes of rest before it starts again

Needless to say I am in the console mode only. I log in, but I am not able to get out of it. If I try startx & etc there is another error msg like NO SCREENS or something. I believe this means that the video card is not detected, or has a too old or new driver?

I was able to learn a few commands to check the log-file. It suggested to send in the file to XFree86.Org unless the card is newer than 16 March 2001, which mine is, so the problem should not be impossible to overcome? In that log file, which I obviously don't understand much of, the unusual things I can see is

(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI unknown chipset (0x5159) rev 0, Mem @ 0xf0000000/27, 0xff9f0000/16, I/O @ 0xec00/8

in the logging of Bus, then the end of the file is

.......

(II) RADEON: Driver for ATI Radeon chipsets: ATI Radeon QD (AGP),

ATI Radeon QE (AGP), ATI Radeon QF (AGP), ATI Radeon QG (AGP)

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0

(--) Assigning device section with no busID to primary device

(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:

no screens found

...............

If I try any of the commands 'startx &' or 'xterm' I get a message like 'NO SCREENS'

What is the best solution here? Do I have to update screen drivers? In that case how do I do that? Or is it better to get a newer version of Linux? Is there something I can do to pin down the problem to avoid too much updating? Should I have sent the /var/log/XFree86.0.log to

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ?

Thanks

Sigmund
