Thanks for the info! Much appreciated! Just a few questions:
1.) How do I find out what current version of X is running? 2.) Is X11, is X-Windows, is XFree86, is XServer, X11R6? What name is what? 3.) So, I do not need to "uninstall" my current version, I just need to delete /usr/X11R6 and save my XF86Config file, in order to install the latest version of XFree from the .tar file I downloaded as you instructed? 4.) I was able to get my resolution up a bit, but was not able to centre it very well in /stand/sysinstall. Is it worth it for me to upgrade to v.4, besides gaining the experience on how to do so? :) 5.) One last thing, once I am at the stag of successfully having the .tar version of v.4 XFree setup, what is the simplest way to get KDE going? I was going to post a step-by-step, blow-by-blow description of the upgrade, but it was so smooth and simple I didn't bother. Fetch ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.2.0/binaries/FreeBSD-4.x.tar (62.5 Megabytes) and unpack it. Read the README and Install. Tar up /etc/X11 and /usr/X11R6, just in case, then go back to the directory that was created when you untarred the kit and "sh ./Xinstall.sh" as root. Answer a number of questions that should be fairly obvious, and if should go just fine. I had to add a stuff to my /etc/X11/XF86Config to make it do 1600x1200 because it wanted to default to something like 1920x1600 that was too small and kinda sparkly because it was just beyound what the monitor is comfortable with. Just remembered: 4.4 comes with XFree86-3.3.6, which doesn't use /etc/X11, so forget the bit about tarring that, just rename or delete /etc/XF86Config (or wherever you keep yours). Tar up /usr/X11R6 if you have anything you might ever want to restore. Look in the list archives for my previous posts on the subject in the last six weeks or so.
