(1) I tried XFree86 -config (or xf86cfg, same result basically, as it calls X -config first anyway). It sig 11 and coredumps. /var/log/X??.8.log indicates that it detected i810, but after vbe ddc, it generated lots of "Symbol yyy from module xxx.o is unresolved" messages and then quits.
(2) So I tried the harder way, xf86config, and then some hand-editing. I was able to generate an XF86Config file that seems reasonably acceptable (at least seems to be 4.x.x format) using i810. Then I ran startx. It sig 11 and coredumps. /var/log/X??.0.log indicates that it detected i810, but after vbe ddc, it generated "Symbol fbPic??? from module i810_drv.o is unresolved" message and then same for symbols XAAFillSolidRects twice. I've seen other posts like this, and I have not seen anyone saying they found a solution yet. The only one that seemed to work was to delete glide_drv.o, but since I don't have that, what should I do? (3) I tried the same thing, except not to specify i810. That defaulted to standard VGA driver. I ran startx again. This time it got thru the lib vbe ddc all right. It assigns the keyboard and mouse. The log seems to indicate that it actually started the logon and waits. But the screen just turned dark. Alt-Ctrl-+ or - didn't help. But Alt-Ctrl-back kills the server, as indicated in the log too. (4) I tried XFree86 -config again with the 4.x.x format config file(s). The screen turned dark, and Ctr-Alt-back or + or - or del won't do anything. I tried to access it over the local net, and it didn't respond either... :-( Is there a way to turn off DDC detection? Maybe that'd be a temporary workaround? FreeBSD.org has a new package XFree86-4.1.0_13,1 just the other day. I downloaded XFree86-4.1.0_12,1. Anyone has idea what changes was made? Could it have been a symbol link problem that I was facing? I installed FreeBSD 4.5-STABLE over the net on my hard drive upgrade, choosing no X (since 3.x only when installed at that time). Then I edited file to load kernel support for agpgart at boot. I downloaded the 4.1.0 binary packages using /stand/sysinstall. (similar to pck_add) I've changed security level to -1. Any help is appreciated. _______________________________________________ Newbie mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] *** To unsubscribe , or change message options, see: http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/newbie
